
WHO ARE WE?
Sur Samalaya Resource Centre for Arts is an independent art and cultural practice institution of Assam. It produces, improvises and manufactures indigenous musical instruments of North East India.
Sur Samalaya resource centre for Arts is an independent institution; working in the field of culture specially focused to the state of Assam (situated in the north eastern part of India). This established in 1990 with a focus to establish self-dependent-self regulated Art industry with the local economy. Present activities of the centre include making and performing of traditional musical instruments use in the traditional performing arts of Assam. Through a process of systematic research Sur Samalaya also trying to resurrect many musical instruments which are departed from the present cultural landscape of Assam. Sur Samalaya is regularly making and performing 64 traditional musical instruments. It has also a marketing wing named ‘Gogoi Badya Bhand’ named after founder Mr. Dijen Gogoi .
Sur Samalaya believes in the organic and traditional knowledge system of learning, whether it is a performance or making a musical instrument. It adopts the traditional method of making instruments rather using technology. The idea is not only to make and perform a form of Art, but to highlight the traditional knowledge system. Presently, Gogoi Badya Bhand has appointed 30 local young artists in the musical instrument making workshop as regular worker.
